The fight against chronic kidney disease in children is making significant progress in Senegal.

According to Dr. Younoussa Keita, a pediatric specialist, nearly 90% of young patients treated manage to overcome these complex pathologies. He spoke to Sud Quotidien during the awareness days on childhood kidney disease organized in Dakar on March 10, under the theme: "Management of chronic kidney disease in children: are our children's kidneys doing well?"

Encouraging results despite the challenges

Chronic kidney disease, particularly congenital malformations, remains a major challenge in Senegal. Dr. Keita stressed that access to care is often limited by families' financial resources. "The cost of medications and tests is a major obstacle for many patients," he explained.

The idiopathic
nephrotic symptom, responsible for 30 to 40% of cases encountered, is particularly problematic. It usually manifests as swelling of the face and feet and accounts for about 20% of chronic kidney disease in children. Despite these obstacles, the results obtained so far are considered encouraging.
