Former Minister of Sports and former Director General of the Senegalese National Lottery (Lonase), Lat Diop, will not be released for the time being. While the Financial Indictment Chamber granted him provisional release under electronic monitoring on Tuesday, March 26, 2025, the Public Prosecutor's Office immediately filed an appeal before the Supreme Court, effectively suspending any release.
A Judicial Standoff Over His Detention
The Financial Indictment Chamber's decision provided for release under strict conditions, including the wearing of an electronic bracelet. However, by appealing to the Supreme Court, the Public Prosecutor's Office blocked the execution of this measure, thus extending Lat Diop's detention pending a new review of the case.
Serious Charges
Incarcerated since September 26, 2024, Lat Diop is facing charges of embezzlement of public funds, extortion, and money laundering, involving an estimated 8 billion CFA francs. These proceedings follow a complaint filed by Mouhamed Dieng, head of 1xBet Senegal.
